Introduction

In Science, Key Stage 3 pupils have opportunities to explore a range of topics and develop Whole Curriculum Skills and Capabilities using scientific methods of enquiry. Pupils learn about:

  • Organisms and Health
  • Chemical and Material Behaviour
  • Forces and Energy
  • Earth and Universe.

This subject strand encourages pupils to further their scientific knowledge and understanding through planning investigations, obtaining evidence, and presenting and interpreting results.

Pupils will have opportunities to develop creative and critical thinking in their approach to solving scientific problems. They should also develop their practical skills by carrying out experiments and demonstrate self-management by working systematically.

 

GCSE Science

Aims

Pupils will

  • develop their interest in, and enthusiasm for Science
  • gain and apply skills, knowledge and understanding of how Science works and its essential role in society
Unit 1 Biology  25%

This unit includes the following topics:

  • Keeping Healthy
  • Co-ordination and Control
  • Medicine and Drugs
  • Adaptation for Survival
  • Energy in Biomass
  • Variation and Evolution

Written Paper – 1 hour.  Closed and structured questions.  One longer response question assessing quality of written communication (QWC) in a science context.

 

Unit 2 Chemistry  25%

This unit includes the following topics:

  • Rocks and Building Materials
  • Metals and their uses
  • Crude Oil and Fuels
  • Products from Oil
  • Plant Oils and our changing planet

Written Paper – 1 hour.  Closed and structured questions.  One longer response question assessing quality of written communication (QWC) in a science context.

 

Unit 3 Physics  25%

This unit includes the following topics:

  • Energy Transfer by Heating
  • Using Energy
  • Electrical Energy
  • Generating Electricity
  • Waves and Electromagnetic Waves

Written Paper – 1 hour.  Closed and structured questions.  One longer response question assessing quality of written communication (QWC) in a science context.
