Welcome to the Travel and Tourism Department

BBTEC Level 2 First Certificate in Travel and Tourism


The Aim of this qualification is to provide students with understanding and knowledge in the travel industry.  Completion of these units will allow students to seek employment within the travel and tourism industry in a wide range of organisations such as retail travel the airlines.  It will also allow students to progress to higher vocational qualifications in this area.

Unit 1 The UK Travel & Tourism Sector 

This unit gets students to review the three different types of tourism – domestic, outbound and inbound.  They will use examples to show how travel fits into each type mentioned.  They will then go on to look at how tourism adds to the UK economy.  Finally they will outline the different types of organisations that contribute to tourism such as travel agents, tourist information centres, taxi companies, guest houses.  They will explore how they all work together to help tourism in the UK.

Unit 2  Understanding the Nature and Effects of World Travel 

This unit gets the students to identify and locate global aspects, natural features and transport gateways around the world.  Students will locate popular holiday destinations in different countries and will outline capital cities, airports, natural features and famous rivers. They will show that they can calculate different time zones that exist between and within different countries and how travellers can survive the jet-lag that occurs when travelling to different parts of the world.

 Unit 3  Holiday Planning

This unit involves the students planning journeys by rail, road, air or coach inside the UK.  It also involves using different sources of information such as holiday brochures or travel web retailers to plan and cost holidays outside the UK.  Students will also be have to give advice and information to customers about what they might need when travelling abroad such as passports, insurance and currency requirements.
