9LK present the #freetobe Internet Safety Assembly

26th Feb 2020

9LK recently delivered an Internet Safety Assembly to all Year 9 and 10.

Their assembly explored how we all have the right to be ourselves online. Every single member of the class played their part in this assembly and did so extremely well. This was noted by their Form Teacher Mrs L. Kearney and their Head of Year Mrs R. Flynn who were very proud of their efforts and the important message they were trying to deliver.

The UK Safer Internet Centre's theme this year is #freetobe.

"It explores what creates our identity online – such as the things we share with each other, how others perceive us and interact with us, as well as how online services use the information we share to identify and profile us. "

The theme explores how many people feel they have to portray a life that is perfect, with the use of the many filtering tools for photos to alter how they look. In many cases the life that people try to portray is very different from the one that they lead. This year's theme is to show students that they have the right to feel #freetobe themselves online.

The Safer Internet Centre have made some suggestions for things we can all do to make the internet a place where more people can feel free to be themselves:

Become allies - Let’s support people who are not well represented online. Remember how it makes you feel

to see people like you online, or when you don’t.

Report negative comments – We can all help to make sure that those messages that make people feel the

internet is not for them are taken down, and that others do not have to see them.

Reach out to people or groups who are being targeted online – These are the people who deserve our

attention, not the people being mean.

Broaden our feeds - Look for more variety in the accounts you follow. There are lots of people doing great

  things online.
