Centre Determined Grades for CCEA Qualifications

17th May 2021

Dear Parent/Guardian,                                                                                                               17th May 2021

Centre Determined Grades Summer 2021

You will be aware that this year the Minister of Education, in line with other parts of the United Kingdom, cancelled all public examinations for students in Years 12, 13 & 14 for the Summer 2021 series.

All post-primary schools across Northern Ireland were required to produce a Centre Determined Grades Policy and submit it to CCEA for feedback and approval.  Our policy was approved and can be viewed in a special section on the school’s website entitled Centre Determined Grades Summer 2021, along with a PowerPoint for parents and students.

This year, CCEA and other awarding organisations are asking schools to award a grade that reflects the standard at which a student is working, assessed only on the specification content that the student/centre has covered.  Grades will be based on teacher judgement using evidence selected by the centre following the alternative arrangements process set out by CCEA and other awarding organisations.   A full list of the evidence that teachers in our school have used can be found on Pages 6 & 7 of the Centre Determined Grades Policy.  Teachers have discussed with the girls the evidence they have used in awarding the grade in each subject area.  Teachers will also have discussed the grades achieved in any individual assessments.  The school has used the 2 additional days provided by the Department of Education called Qualification Procedure Days (10th & 21st May) to internally standardise and moderate across departments at GCSE & Post 16.

Grades submitted to CCEA and other awarding organisations are not final until they are released in August 2021 and may be subject to change. The Department of Education has stated that students should not be informed of their Centre Determined Grades until Results Day in August.

I know that the majority of students in Years 12 & 14 have completed the process for this year; whilst students in some subjects still have work to complete.  This has been outlined to all parents in previous communication.

Year 13 students have moved on to begin the work for Year 14 as per the directive from the Department of Education.   It is imperative that the girls are in school every day until the end of June working with their teachers to reach their full potential.

If you require any clarification on any of the above, you can contact the school and speak to a member of the Senior Leadership Team.

I wish all our students every success for August.

Yours sincerely,

Ms McLaughlin

Principal
