Coffee and Connect: The Difference a Cup of Coffee can Make!

8th Oct 2018

On Tuesday 2nd October the Newry, Mourne and Down District Council invited representatives from St Mary’s High School to attend their “Coffee and Connect” celebration event for World Mental Health Day. We were treated to refreshments, freebies  and talks from the South Eastern Health and Social Care Trust and the PSNI. The event was held in order to promote the “Take 5 Steps to Wellbeing” a set of evidence- based public health messages aimed at improving the wellbeing of the whole population. They are based on the ‘Five Ways to Wellbeing’ developed by the New Economics Foundation (NEF) as a result of research undertaken as part of the Foresight Project on Mental Capital and Wellbeing. NEF stated that if practised regularly, personal wellbeing will improve. The steps include connecting with others, being active, taking notice of what goes around you, learning new things and doing something nice for a friend or stranger. The event gave us much to think about and generated much discussion about how mental wellbeing means feeling good - about ourselves and the world around us.
