ST MARY’S CELEBRATES DIAMOND JUBILEE 1957-2017

27th Nov 2017

St Mary’s High School, Downpatrick has held a number of events to celebrate the school’s diamond jubilee this year. Sixty years ago the Sisters of Mercy established the school in honour of their founder, Sister Catherine McAuley who was dedicated to the education of girls. The school has flourished on the foundations established by the Sisters of Mercy providing a high quality education for every child. Our school motto ‘Every Child Matters’ is at the heart of all that we do. We have high aspirations for every child. The focus on a growth mindset and a ‘Can do Attitude’ are embedded across the school to support our students in an encouraging way. We are proud of our 60-year history and all our achievements.

CELEBRATIONS

A Mass of Thanksgiving was concelebrated by the Most Rev Bishop Farquhar on 22nd September 2017, Mercy Day, to celebrate the work of the school during its 60 year history. It was attended by members of the Mercy congregation, pupils, staff both past and present, the governing body, former pupils, representatives from local schools, CCMS, businesses and the local community.

A Gala Ball took place on 6th October in the ‘Burrendale Hotel’, Newcastle for past pupils, past and present members of staff.

On 6th November the school was open to the public to view photographic displays and memorabilia throughout the school’s 60 year history. Many former pupils and staff had the opportunity to take a trip down memory lane.

These public events provided the school with the opportunity to recognise the impact St Mary’s has had on the local community and to thank the community for the support it has given to the school.
