United Nations Global Citizen Award Presented to St Mary’s High School

Two students from St Mary’s High School have been presented with the United Nations Global Citizen Award. Sr Vianney presented the award on behalf of Sr Deirdre Mullan, Director of the Mercy Global Concern at the United Nations, New York.

Sr Vianney said, ‘It is very seldom that this award is given and it is the first time that this award has been given to a school.’

The two students have been recognised for the voluntary work that they have undertaken in the local community and the way in which they have been prepared to improve the quality of life of other people. Both students are also very active in their school community fundraising for charities, raising awareness of global poverty and carrying on the Mercy tradition of the founder Catherine McAuley. The Sisters of Mercy are currently working worldwide in 43 countries.

The Principal, Mrs Darling said, ‘The school is very honoured to have been presented with this award. At St Mary’s we encourage every student to make their contribution to their local community and to society and it is very fitting that two of our students have been recognised in this way.’
