A very warm welcome to our Year 8 2020-21

We would like to extend a very warm 'virtual' welcome to our new students who will be joining us in September 2020. We are already calling you 'our new Year 8', but we know that might take a little getting used to for you! This page is going to be devoted to you, to help prepare you for the new school term.

In Year 8 you will do subjects that you may not have experienced before. To give you an idea what these subjects are all about, you can download the activity pack that Mrs Brown, your Head of Year, has coordinated for you.

We are sure you have lots more questions. Hopefully you will know someone who attends our school already who you can ask. If you don't, please do not worry. Just download the Induction booklet below and hopefully this will give you a better idea of the day to day running of our school.

You will also see our Induction presentation which will show you the activities our students take part in, during the academic year.

You will also be able to download our Acceptable Use Policy and our Mobile Phone Policy. These policies outline our rules for the use of the computer equipment and mobiles phones in school. These policies must be read and signed by you and your parents/guardians before you start your new school year. You will receive a paper copy of them in due course and we will let you know when you need to bring them back to us.

We hope that this information and these videos will give you a better idea of what life in St. Mary's is all about.

We really look forward to welcoming each and every one of you, and your parents/guardians, into our school. You are already part of our St. Mary's family.

A message from our Principal Ms Mc Laughlin

Primary 7 pupils you are very welcome to this section on our website that has been specially created for you and your parents.

In September 2020-21 you will be one of 75 Year 8 girls who will be joining us to become St Mary’s girls! I know from speaking to your parents that you are all very excited about coming to join us and we are equally excited at the prospect of getting to know all of you. You are coming from a wide range of primary schools from across Co. Down. I know you will be wondering what to expect; that is why we asked a Year 8 pupil to make a video especially for you so that she could share her experiences. Our Head Girl will be heading off to university and she wanted to tell you about her memories. Very soon, you will make your own memories with new friends and teachers who will get to know you. Your teachers will expect you to:

  • work hard
  • take pride in your work
  • do your very best

If you have any questions you can email Mrs Brown your Head of Year and she will do her very best to help you.

I am really looking forward to meeting you. I have spoken to many of your mothers who are past pupils with a long association with our outstanding school.

I hope you have an enjoyable summer so that you will be feeling refreshed and ready to begin the next stage of your educational journey with us.

Best wishes,

Ms McLaughlin.

A very warm welcome to our new Year 8 pupils for the academic year 2020-21

Each of you will be assigned a Form Teacher who will look after your Form Class. This will be your 'go to' person for both you and your parents/guardians. Your Form Teacher will be the welcoming face you will see at 9am every morning in your Form Classroom, before you start your day. Not only will you have a Form Teacher to look after you, but also a Head of Year. Mrs Brown will be your Head of Year, throughout your time in St. Mary's. She is really looking forward to meeting you all so much. She has made a little welcoming video for you so that, come September, you can put a face to the name.

What is it like to be a Year 8 in St. Mary's?

We are sure you are wondering what life will be like as a Year 8 in St. Mary's High School. It will be different from primary school but after a few weeks we know you will become very familiar with it all. Here is one of our current Year 8 pupils to tell you about her own experience. This time last year Grace was in the very same position as you, so we hope this gives you a little insight into what is ahead for you.

A message from our Head Girl

In St. Mary's we have a Head Girl team. This team is made up of students in Yr 14. The Head Girl Team look after the students interests and are actively involved in the Student Council. They also represent the student body at different events throughout the year.

Just as you are starting your new school year, in St. Mary's, our Head Girl will be coming to the end of hers. As this time in St. Mary's draws to a close, Roise wanted to send you a message about her experiences in St. Mary's, over the last seven years to help to prepare you for this new adventure.
