Introduction
In Technology and Design, pupils have opportunities to explore a range of topics and develop Whole Curriculum Skills and Capabilities. Pupils learn about:
- Design
- Communication
- Manufacturing
- Control.
Technology and Design encourages pupils to develop creative thinking and problem-solving skills by evaluating design proposals and selecting and using materials that are fit for purpose.
Pupils should have opportunities to research and manage information effectively to investigate design issues. They should also think critically and flexibly, and demonstrate creativity and initiative when developing ideas and following them through
Key Stage 3 Technology
Technology is offered at KS3 level in St Mary's with pupils from years 8, 9 & 10 studying it once a week on a carousel timetable.
Year 8 & 9 study the subject for 9 weeks whereas year 10's will complete 13 weeks.
The subject offers pupils the opportunity to develop a range of transferrable skills whilst also expanding their knowledge and handling on various resistant materials and tools.
The structure of the lessons will allow students to;
- demonstrate practical skills in the safe use of a range of tools, machines and equipment;
- research and manage information effectively to investigate design issues, using Mathematics and ICT where appropriate;
- show deeper understanding by thinking critically and flexibly, solving problems and making informed decisions, using Mathematics and ICT where appropriate;
- demonstrate creativity and initiative when developing ideas and following them through;
- work effectively with others;
- demonstrate self management by working systematically, persisting with tasks, evaluating and improving own performance;
- communicate effectively in oral, visual (including graphic), written, mathematical and ICT formats showing
