EA - Digital Parenting Update

21st Apr 2023

Digital Parenting. As parents and teachers – we know that the world of parenting has changed completely in a single generation through the advent of digital technology. It can be really difficult for parents to keep up with the latest trends. The Digital Parenting Magazine – now in its 10th edition – is a free and useful way to support parents of different aged grouped children. It can be sent digitally to parents and/or you can also order free hard copies for your parents here.

How to report harmful and illegal content online.

South West Grid for Learning (SWGfL) has produced a really useful Guide to Online Reporting poster that is being used in schools across Northern Ireland as a useful reminder of why and when to report, and signposts to other services and support.

It is important to remind our children that being targeted by an instigator of online harm can make us feel powerless, alone and without support. By reporting such incidents, allows us to take back some control whilst getting support from those who can help. It is also crucial to add that even if we aren’t being targeted ourselves, we’ve all seen something online that we know is hurting someone, somewhere. Rather than ignore it, reporting it is a small step towards showing instigators that this type of harmful behaviour will not be tolerated online.

Impact of Online Hate.

Ofcom’s recent research report explores the impact of online hate, including hate speech and hateful abuse. It is helpful in supporting professionals and parents/guardians to understand the impact on pupils (or on staff) of being targeted in this way.
